This castle was built in 1520 and is named after King Guaire, who was the ruler of Connacht at that time. It is one of the area’s most photographed structures.

Dunguaire Castle has been used as a location for a few movies. “Guns in the Heather” (1969), featuring Kurt Russel, in which the castle was passed off as the Boyne Castle. “Flight of the Doves” (1971), by Ralph Nelson, and also the Scottish castle home of the main character in the 1979 film “North Sea Hijack”
